If I have satellite television and want to purchase a dvd recorder, do I need a built-in tuner?
A DVD recorder will ALMOST always have a built-in digital tuner, anyway as long as it is a recent model. A few years ago, analog tuner - but still a tuner.
With satellite, your signal coming in is digital and is encrypted. Your receiver decrypts it for you. Therefore, unlike with cable - if you had no receiver you would not get a picture when you connect your coax from the satellite to any other device. If you wanted to watch one channel and record another, you would need two receivers or another signal source such as an antenna.
Therefore, in your case, it's not absolutely necessary for the recorder to have a tuner because it will basically be useless anyway other than to tune channel 3 for an RF through-signal. But, most likely it will come with a tuner anyhow.
