When is the blue ray home entertainment format going to take over? Is it still worth buying DVDs?
There is no clear path for blu-ray, or the competing technology HD-DVD. The industry is almost completely split among the two technologies. It is true that this is looking like another VHS/BetaMAX war. The one advantage is that unlike VHS and BetaMAX, both of these media have the same physical dimensions and use the same blue-violet laser. In other words, when you hold the disk, it will look like a CD or DVD. Therefore it is feasible that there will be players that come out that will be able to play both blu-ray discs and HD-DVD discs. This is probably about a year away.
As far as continuing to purchase DVDs, I say go for it! Another benefit of the fact that these new formats have the same physical dimensions as CDs and DVDs is that all of the new players will be able to play DVDs and CDs as well as the new formats. Just beware of the features that a new player has before you buy it. I wouldn't be quick to jump on the bandwagon of the new technologies until a player comes out that will play both of the new formats or until one of the new formats is declared a winner.
